Rooftop bank-data-centre power

Following adjacent N.G.Bailey work on Hardman Street, Manchester, the client’s consultant requested an end-to-end solution: two containerised 1,800kVA MTU sets with Newage Stamford alternators and DSE synchronising controls, operating in parallel with N+1 redundancy. Procurement and assembly took 18weeks.

Lifting and access

Each 14-tonne set was dismantled for a 150-foot lift onto a 15-storey building. A 200-tonne crane with 30m reach required council-approved road closure from Friday afternoon to Monday morning and overnight assembly. Ainscough managed the contract lift, supported by NATS weather coordination. Wind cancelled Saturday lifting; the available Sunday window was 04:00–06:00. Containers, exhausts and silencers were lifted separately. Noise specification: 70dB(A) at 1m.

Acceptance and training

  • Three days for commissioning and a witnessed black-start/mains-failure test.
  • Three-day workshop for the customer’s engineering staff.
  • Built-in load banks for annual full-load testing with reduced disruption.

Handover and support

The 3.6MVA installation met programme and budget. Maintenance continued after installation, backed by 24-hour emergency attendance.
