Upgrading Critical Power Infrastructure in the North West

Replacing a historic standby set

A live transport facility in north-west England needed to replace its 1950s Lister Blackstone generator. Servicing the old equipment had become difficult, and its reliability no longer suited the site’s critical operations.

Equipment supplied

  • 500kVA YorPower generator with a Scania engine.
  • Acoustic attenuators and exhaust silencers.
  • Electrical integration and complete commissioning.

Removal and installation challenges

Reliable weight and dimension information for the old generator was unavailable. Engineers assessed load-bearing requirements and lifting points, then coordinated specialist transport for its removal. Delivery and installation were scheduled around restricted access windows to avoid disrupting the working transport hub. Precision handling allowed the new equipment to be positioned within the tight site constraints.

Commissioning and outcome

Engineers installed the noise-control equipment and tested the integrated system using simulated mains-failure conditions. The completed replacement provides modern standby generation, lower noise levels and improved serviceability through available parts and maintenance support.
